PYROLATOR

Inland. CD, vinyl (180g), download. Out Mar 9, 2012

Pyrolator is the co-founder of the legendary German label and publisher Ata Tak, was a member of various seminal post-punk bands such as D.A.F. and Der Plan and released solo albums under his artist name from 1979 onwards until today. His debut album "Inland" from 1979 features cold, urbane, disconcerting synthesizer sounds and aural collages, imbued with the post-punk/industrial zeitgeist as the seventies segued into the eighties. Yet sounding so fresh, it might have been recorded today. This reissue contains 6 bonus tracks.

QLUSTER

Antworten. CD, vinyl (180g), download. Out Feb 24, 2012

"Antworten" is an early Qluster statement. It has been recorded before the two other albums of the Qluster trilogy "Fragen/Rufen/Antworten". Seldom has a musical duo been so united in heart and soul as Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Onnen Bock on that January evening 2007, when they recorded their improvised nocturnes on two Steinway grand pianos in the Berliner Philharmonie. Completely unplugged and utterly relaxed, Roedelius and Bock tossed musical ideas back and forth without pause, occasionally adding in the delicate tone of a distant singing bowl.

39 CLOCKS

Subnarcotic. CD, download. Out Mar 2nd, 2012

Second album by the legendary Hanover duo, that was notorious for transgressing every rule in the music business book. Systematically. And with style. The 39 Clocks invented the Original Psycho Beat: futuristic, hypnotic 60s psychedelia with a beatbox deferred to the early 80s. "Subnarcotic" from 1982 is the pivotal work in the band's history. The reissue is mastered from the original tapes (in better sound quality than the original vinyl), and includes a previously unreleased bonus track

Ulrich Schnauss, master of shoegazer indietronica, and Mark Peters, bass player, guitarist and songwriter in the British band Engineers, present their first collaboration: They have crafted music which is enchanting in the truest sense of the word, shimmering sounds, floating echoes, rhythmically reverberant chords which wrap themselves around the listener, lifting him into a state of suspension and carrying him gently away.

ANDREAS DORAU (DIE DORAUS UND DIE MARINAS)

Blumen und Narzissen. CD, vinyl (180g), download. Out Jan 27th, 2012

Andreas Dorau, born 1964, is a marvellous pop musician, equipped with the choicest humour and the gift of creating wonderful melodies. Aged 16, he wrote the huge hit "Fred vom Jupiter" and has been championed erroniously as representing German New Wave (NDW) ever since. "Blumen und Narzissen" (1981) is Dorau's first LP: an independent product and an accordingly unpolished production. "Fred vom Jupiter" is just one of many good-tempered and infectious pop hits included.

SØLYST

Sølyst. CD, download, LP (+ download code).

Kreidler drummer Thomas Klein presents his first solo album. Like Kreidler SØLYST also unites analogue drums and electronically generated patterns. Klein is a musical hypnotist, taking aim at rhythmic ecstasy with minimal, yet highly effective means. SØLYST's darkly pulsating aural cosmos envelops the listener and holds him fast as a fantastic voyage commences. Afrobeat, minimal music, Krautrock, dub, cosmic – a genre to encompass these influences has yet to be invented, so Tribal Dub Krautrock is perhaps the most fitting description.

HANS-JOACHIM ROEDELIUS

Wie das Wispern des Windes / Like The Whispering Of The Wind. CD, vinyl (180g), download.

If we can agree on 1969 as the year of Cluster's inception, then Roedelius needed a good 17 years to discover the aural qualities and musical beauty of the grand piano for his own compositions. Rarely has the title of a Roedelius album so poetically and yet so accurately described its content. On "Like The Whispering Of The Wind" from 1986 Roedelius expands his Études towards amorphousness, then suddenly a disarmingly familiar melody appears, from a completely different source perhaps (Harmonia? Cluster?). Released on CD for the first time!

YOU

Electric Day. CD, vinyl (180g), download

Spherical, hypnotic sequencers, synthesizers, drums and guitar – that is the sound of the so called Berlin School of electronic music: Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze et al. A hitherto less celebrated, yet outstanding exponent of the Berlin School was the Krefeld combo YOU. Udo Hanten and Albin Meskes teamed up with another iconic figure of electronic music, Harald Grosskopf (drummer for Ashra, Klaus Schulze), to issue their fantastic debut album 1979. YOU

Time Code. CD, vinyl (180g), download.

Four years after releasing their debut (see above) YOU delivered the sophomore LP, entitled "Time Code". Reduced to a duo, YOU largely remained faithful to their style, but expanded upon it. Down tempo and faster numbers alternate and sugar sweet melodies are followed by expanses of ominously dark or crystal clear synthesizers. The album perfectly illustrates the transition of electronic music from the 1970s to the 1980s. Sequencer patterns owe much to the legacy of the Berlin School, whilst the synthesizer and drum computer sounds heralded the advent of the new decade. CD and download include two bonus tracks!

Bock (born 1973) and Roedelius have been meeting up to explore new musical directions together since 2007. Momenti Felici. CD, vinyl (180g), download.

Since the early eighties, Roedelius had more or less dispensed with electronics, focussing increasingly on the grand piano. He also collaborated with various combinations of musicians to create a new kind of music, vastly different to Cluster and Harmonia aesthetics. "Momenti Felici" (first released in 1987 on Venture) is one of the finest examples hereof: an enthusiastic Roedelius allowed new impressions and discoveries to flow virtually unfiltered into his music. Cluster 71. CD, vinyl (180g), download.

According to "The Wire", the British bible of musical excellence, Cluster 71 is one of the "One Hundred Records That Set The World On Fire". Very few albums from Germany can lay claim to this honour. The album is a monster: Cluster's debut work from the year 1971 (actually just called Cluster) contains a mere three tracks (untitled) and is quite an ordeal for untrained ears – back then, at least. ROEDELIUS

Selbstportrait. CD, vinyl (180g), download.

Alongside his ongoing work with Cluster and Harmonia, Hans-Joachim Roedelius amassed an almost incalculable number of musical notations during his time in the idyllic Weser Uplands. Fleeting sketches, spontaneous improvisations, implied miniatures, rough compositions – Roedelius recorded virtually every idea he came up with outside the studio sessions on his Revox A77 reel to reel; with the basic intention of capturing his moments of inspiration, he simply let the tape run as he played around on the Farfisa organ. Sound quality was not his prime concern, as he was not as yet entertaining any notion of releasing the results. First 1:1 reissue ever!

Selbstportrait II. CD, vinyl (180g), download

With "Selbstportrait I" (see above) Roedelius gave unequivocal confirmation that he no longer was treading the hitherto common paths of electronic music. "Selbstportrait II" corroborated the findings: for Roedelius, electronics would no longer be a means of creating abstract, noise-like music in the future, nor of generating utopian, mechanical rhythmic structures. His own utopia was quite a different place, more in keeping with his own personality and view of the world. Hence both self-portraits, in particular "Selbstportrait II", are programmatic. PHANTOM BAND

Phantom Band. CD, vinyl (180g), download

The first band of Can drummer Jaki Liebezeit after Can split up in 1979. The first line-up (1980) included top musicians such as Helmut Zerlett (e.g. Dunkelziffer, Unknown Cases), Rosko Gee (Traffic, Can), Dominik von Senger (e.g. Damo Suzuki Band, Dunkelziffer), Olek Gelba, and Holger Czukay (Can) as guest musician. The Phantom Band mixes Can-style monotonic polyrhythms with afrobeat, funk, jazz, disco, reggae, and dub. A nearly forgotten exciting musical experience!

PHANTOM BAND

Freedom Of Speech. CD, vinyl (180g), download

The second album of the Phantom Band is quite different to the predecessor. The line-up features the spoken word performer Sheldon Ancel on the microphone instead of bass player Rosko Gee. Whilst the debut album revealed many Caribbean or African influences and a generally positive frame of mind, "Freedom of Speech" is a somewhat darker avant-garde rock manifesto, interspersed with individual dub or reggae pieces. All they have in common are Jaki Liebezeit's inimitable monotone polyrhythmic drumming and the Phantom Band's predilection for hypnotic (Jamaican) grooves.

FEHLFARBEN

Es geht voran / Feuer an Bord. 7" Vinyl.

Fehlfarben were the first commercially successful band of the German Postpunk scene. Initially the band never wanted "Es geht voran" to be included on their debut album "Monarchie und Alltag". In fact, it turned out to be their biggest commercial hit by some distance. It can also lay claim to the rare achievement of appearing regularly on NDW (German New Wave) compilations and proving equally popular in the underground scene. The B side is an ultra rare single version. On vinyl 7" single only!
